Marvel’s CONAN THE BARBARIAN Relaunch Gets a Creative Team

Marvel’s CONAN THE BARBARIAN Relaunch Gets a Creative Team

Marvel wrapped up Conan the Barbarian‘s ongoing series in 1993 after 275 issues. Many years later, Conan is returning to Marvel with a brand new ongoing series that will continue to explore Robert E. Howard’s iconic character, and Marvel has revealed the new creative team and the launch date for Conan the Barbarian.

Avengers and Thor writer Jason Aaron will be scripting Conan’s ongoing adventures, and Mahmud Asrar, who is also working on the upcoming Uncanny X-Men relaunch, is providing the art, with colors by Matt Wilson. Esad Ribic will be the primary cover artist of Conan the Barbarian, and it appears that he’ll be maintaining the pulpy flavor of the classic Conan covers.

Aaron and Asrar’s first Conan arc will be a 12 issue storyline called “The Life and Death of Conan.” It will jump around in Conan’s timeline and take place at different points in his life. That includes his early days in Cimmeria and his rise to power as the king of Aquilonia.

Along with the announcement, Marvel also reissued a Mike Deodato illustration of Conan with Thor and Wolverine in the background. It could simply be a way to demonstrate Conan’s return to Marvel, but Conan has previously crossed over with both characters within the What If ongoing series. Also, Conan’s Hyborian Age was written into Marvel’s lore, and it would be very easy to revisit that history now that the rights are back at the company.

Conan the Barbarian #1 will be released in January 2019.
