Not only has the final season premiere date been (roughly) revealed, but we now have an update on the highly-anticipated prequel pilot. It’s all happening! During the 2018 Summer Television Critics Association press tour early Wednesday morning, HBO President Casey Bloys revealed that while he wasn’t going to talk (at all) about what fans can expect from the final season (yeah, yeah, no surprise there but we had to try), he did let slip that “it’s pretty great.”
“I don’t think we’ve announced a date yet so sometime in ’19, how about that,” Bloys said, evoking a big laugh from the audience. When pressed for which quarter of the year it will air, he finally relented. “First half,” he added. So mark your calendars and set your DVR’s for sometime between January and June 2019! Hopefully it comes sooner rather than later so we can all use the catchphrase accurately…
As for that one Game of Thrones prequel pilot (out of the five originally ordered), HBO is officially moving ahead with one as previously reported last month. “The update I will give you on the prequels is we are doing a pilot that Jane Goldman wrote,” Bloys said. “Our thought going into it, the reason we did multiple scripts was, as you all know, in the development process, out of five we feel like we’ll have one that we are very, very excited about. And we did get that. For right now, that’s the update.”
But the pilot is moving forward and it sounds like production is slated for sometime around when the final Game of Thrones season will air. “We are just starting the search for director, casting director,” Bloys said. “We hope to be shooting sometime in the new year. Beyond that, there are no other [updates].”
And that concludes your monthly Game of Thrones update!
