It’s no secret that the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) need more women. Progress is happening, but we’re not there yet. What’s exciting is that Marvel Studio is now getting involved in the cause by creating a competitive internship program for young girls who display a passion and ability in one of the STEM areas.
Marvel is inviting girls between ages 15-18 to submit creative STEM-based projects that have the potential to make the world a better place. This is a pretty hefty ask, so the website offers a few suggestions: “a project that could simplify our lives, help the disabled, or make life a little safer or healthier.” Five finalists will be flown to California, where they will present their project to a panel of experts. Oh, and they’ll also get to walk the red carpet at the Captain America: Civil War world premiere, take a tour of the Walt Disney Studios and Dolby Laboratories, participate in a live global Broadcom Masters webinar and discuss their STEM skills, and receive a $500 Savings account from Synchrony Bank. No big deal.
A grand prize winner will be selected from the five, and she will win an internship with Marvel. The below video shows Captain America: Civil War heroines Elizabeth Olsen and Emily VanCamp introducing the Marvel internship, and I’ll admit, their enthusiasm is infectious.
