Which Starter Pokémon Will POKÉMON LEGENDS: Z-A Have?

Following the new announcement for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, everyone immediately began wondering what the starter Pokémon would be for this Pokémon game. In a new trailer dropped on Pokémon Day, Pokémon Legends: Z-A revealed its starter Pokémon to the world.

We already knew that Pokémon Legends: Z-A would be set in Lumiose City, which previously appeared in the Pokémon X and Pokémon Y games. However, none of the starters are a part of Generation IV, which debuted in X and Y. Instead, Pokémon Legends: Z-A‘s three starter Pokémon are Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile.

As mentioned above, a new trailer for the game dropped on Pokémon Day, and you can watch it below. Through this new tease, we found out that Pokémon Legends: Z-A‘s choice of starters includes two Johto region Pokémon and one Unova: Todadile, Chickorita, and Tepig, respectively. This was an interesting choice from Pokémon since Tepig is an outlier in the starters, hailing from the Unova region and being a generation V Pokémon, while Todadile and Chickorita are both from the Johto region. Like the majority of Pokémon games, there is a choice between a water, grass, and fire type within these starter Pokémon options.

If you are wondering which starter you should choose when you play Pokémon Legends: Z-A, check out our in-depth explanation of the Pokémon starters below.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A‘s Water-Type Starter Pokémon Is Totodile

A classic that hails from generation II, Totodile is a great addition to any team. Totodile has two evolutions: Croconaw and Feraligatr. Totodile first appeared as the water-type starter Pokémon in the games Pokémon Gold and Silver, which came out in 1999 for the Gameboy Color. In the animated series, Totodile is known to have a mischievous nature. The Pokémon Legends: Z-A starter Pokémon has powerful jaws that are reportedly able to crush anything, according to its Pokedex entry. Traditionally, Totodile evolves into Croconaw at level 18 and into Feraligatr at level 30. Totodile’s ability is torrent, which powers up water-type moves when its HP is low.

The Pokémon Legends: Z-A webpage shares the following important intel about its water-type starter Pokémon:

Because Totodile will bite indiscriminately, even its Trainer must be careful. While Totodile may think it’s playfully nipping, its bite has enough power to cause serious injury. Make sure not to inadvertently turn your back to it!

Pokémon Legends: Z-A‘s Grass-Type Starter Pokémon Is Chikorita

Chikorita, the grass-type starter Pokémon for Pokémon Legends: Z-A is also from Pokémon Gold and Silver. Chickorita has two evolutions: Bayleef and Meganium. Chikorita is small and known to be gentle. It has a large leaf sprouting from its head. Chikorita loves to be out in the sunlight because of the leaf on its head that can also check the humidity and temperature of the area it’s in, according to its Pokedex entry. Chikorita can evolve into Bayleef starting at level 16. At level 32, it can fully evolve into Meganium. Similar to Totodile, its ability is overgrow, which powers up grass-type moves when its HP is low.

The Pokémon Legends: Z-A webpage offers these notes about its grass-type starter Pokémon:

Chikorita has a gentle personality. While at first it may wave its leaf around fiercely to keep its opponent at bay, a sweet fragrance wafts from the leaf, which will calm both battling Pokémon and create a cozy, friendly atmosphere in the end.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A‘s Fire-Type Starter Pokémon Is Tepig

Tepig is the outlier starter Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A since it comes from the Pokémon Black and White games, which were released in 2010 for the Nintendo DS. Therefore, Tepig is from the Unova region as opposed to the other two other Pokémon Legends: Z-A starter Pokémon that are from Johto. Tepig’s two evolutions include Pignite and Emboar. Tepig is a small fire pig with an orange and black body. It has a curly tail that is present in all its evolutions. Despite being a pig, Tepig is very fast and shoots fireballs from its nostrils. This Pokémon starter is also very good at finding food because of its sense of smell. Tepig can begin to evolve into Pignite at level 17. Its third and final evolution can happen at level 36 when it becomes Emboar. Tepig turns bipedal after its first evolution.

The Pokémon Legends: Z-A webpage describes the fire-type starter Pokémon as follows:

Tepig is nimbler than it looks. It uses its speed to confound enemies, dodging their attacks with agility and rapidly launching fireballs from both nostrils. When it catches a cold, its fire becomes pitch-black smoke instead.

More About The Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is expected to release in late 2025. This game will take place in Lumiose City “
where an urban redevelopment plan is underway to shape the city into a place that belongs to both people and Pokémon. Compared to Lumiose City as it appeared in the Pokémon X and Pokémon Y games released in 2013, more greenery now adorns the city, alongside facilities with a cutting-edge feel.”

Additionally, “While visiting Lumiose City during your travels, you’ll come to stay in an old hotel named Hotel Z. This hotel will serve as your base as you and the new friends you’ll meet in Lumiose tackle all sorts of incidents that will occur in the city.” You’ll also visit “Wild Zones,” special habitats for Pokémon in the city, make Pokémon your allies, and do battle in real-time.

We can’t wait to dive deeper into Pokémon Legends: Z-A as it comes closer to release, and, of course, get ready to choose our favorite starter Pokémon to accompany us on this adventure. Will it be Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile? Only you can decide.
