What You Need to Know from Marvel’s Panel – Spider-Man, Thor, and Star Lord’s Father

Powered by Geek & Sundry

All sorts of news is dropping about what we can expect from Marvel in the coming years. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a ton of footage released from the comic giant’s Hall H panel. However, there was quite a bit of stuff to unpack from the panel with the cast from Thor: Ragnorak, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Black Panther showing up. Even more exciting? We’ve officially got word on who will be playing  Captain Marvel. So even though we don’t have a bunch of trailers to show off, let’s jump in on what you need to know:

Thor: Ragnorak

Obviously, Thor and Hulk were both missing from the events of Civil War, and their absence is definitely going to be explained–we just don’t know how. We do know that Hulk will be donning the armor from the Planet Hulk series, and we’ve even seen a sneak peek of what it looks like:

Black Panther

We haven’t known much about official cast for this film apart from Chadwick Boseman himself, but know we’ve got some solid casting info. The film’s Big Bad will be played by Michael B. Jordan, who will be playing the character Erik Killmonger. He’ll be aided by the amazing Lupita Nyong’o who will play former Dora Milaje member and current Killmonger agent, Nakia. And to add to the list of badass women in this movie, our favorite katana-wielding walker hunter, Danai Gurira, will be playing Okoye, a member of the Dora Milaje.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

This latest reboot of our friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man will (mercifully) be skipping Peter Parker’s origin story, and will jump right into showing him as a high schooler and part-time superhero. The footage shown from the film gives the movie a vibe Spider-Man hasn’t had on the big screen before. Peter Parker is a teenager, and this movie is going to be about a teen superhero starring teen actors. If what we saw of Spidey in Civil War is any indication, he’s absolutely delightful to watch onscreen. So even though the film will have a younger feel to it, this film might feel like the most authentic Spider-Man movie we’ve gotten in a while.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

You guys, we finally know who Peter Quill’s dad is: Ego the Living Planet (played by Kurt Russell). Of course, the obvious question is how can a literal planet father a child, and James Gunn promised everyone that the film would answer that question. Even more fun than planet sex? It looks like Michael Rooker’s character, Yondu, has officially been promoted to an official Guardian of the Galaxy–Rooker celebrated by showing up to the panel in full costume, naturally. Also, Karen Gillan did not go bald for her second round as Nebula. No, Nebula will have hair in this movie, so Gillan will not have to look like, as she calls it, “a long baby”. Bless.

Captain Marvel

Rumors have been circulating for a while, but it’s official. We have our new Captain Marvel. So who will be bringing Carol Danvers to life on the big screen? The one and only Brie Larson! She tweeted this picture out shortly after the announcement was made to show her alliance to Marvel:

Of course, we’ve got a bit of a wait ahead of us before Carol’s standalone movie releases. However, it stands to reason that her casting announcement coming so far ahead of the Captain Marvel film means we’ll be seeing Captain Marvel in an upcoming Marvel film, most likely Infinity War. Hell. Yes.

What do you think of the news coming out of Hall H tonight? Which movie are you most pumped to see? What do you think of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
