Weta’s Giant Killer Robots Bring the Heavy Hitters to Tabletop

Powered by Geek & Sundry

Last month, Weta opened its doors to Adam Savage and allowed him to get a hands on look at the new tabletop game, Giant Killer Robots, before anyone else. Now, Weta has unleashed the Kickstarter for Giant Killer Robots: Heavy Hitters, and it flew past its $100,000 funding goal in just 4.5 hours!

Currently, the Giant Killer Robots campaign is closing in on $500,000 and it’s already a runaway success with almost a month remaining. This is Weta’s first tabletop game, and it takes place 100 years from now, as humanity recovers from the wars that devastated the Earth. Salvage rights for the cities have become the newest battlegrounds for the corporations that now rule the planet. But the new corporate overlords have turned their wars into a spectator sport, with televised clashes between the titular giant killer robots.

Within the game, players will control one of the select pilots who fight on behalf of the corporation, using a series of support robots as well as the “Heavy Hitters” that will have epic battles with each on a grand scale. There’s also more than one path to victory for the pilots. Players can either defeat their opponents outright on the battlefield, or they can achieve dominance by tagging abandoned buildings with their corporate logos and reduce them to rubble before their enemies can claim them.

The core game will be available to backers for $99, while two additional upgrades will allow players to receive exclusive miniatures of the pilots and unpainted models of the Heavy Hitter robots. All of the rewards after $99 will include the unlocked stretch goals. The Kickstarter campaign will run until Friday, March 24; and the games are expected to be shipped by December of this year.
