Wes Anderson’s ASTEROID CITY Promises 1950s Small Town Strangeness in First Trailer

Wes Anderson films are known for being eccentric and visually unique. And that certainly doesn’t change with Asteroid City, his upcoming period flick with a dash of dramatic flair starring Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Hanks, among many other big Hollywood names. Asteroid City takes place in an oddly idyllic (and therefore inherently creepy) small desert town in circa 1955 and its trailer is quite the explosion of color saturation and unsettling hints at otherworldly happenings.

Schwartzman plays a widower with four kids who is making a cross country trip to see his father (Tom Hanks). The car breaks down in Asteroid City, where a junior stargazing competition lures the family into staying for a spell. Then, things get odd with strange earthquakes and fears of aliens living among residents. On, and a celebrity (Scarlett Johansson) is also in the mix for all the trappings of small town entertainment. The Asteroid City trailer certainly is a full adventure.

The trailer also gives us a glimpse at Asteroid City‘s many recognizable actors. The film has a heavy roster, including Margot Robbie, Jeffrey Wright, Hong Chau, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Rupert Friend, Stephen Park, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Grace Edwards, Aristou Meehan, Sophia Lillis, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Lee, and Rita Wilson. That is a lot of star power.

Catch Asteroid City in select theaters on June 16. A nationwide release will follow on June 23.
