If you sometimes feel like Weezer is literally everywhere these days, well, that’s because they are. Somehow the band has become one of the most ubiquitous groups in all of pop culture.
No one can escape their cover of Toto’s “Africa”; recently they were the basis for one of the most niche Saturday Night Live sketches ever; they dropped a surprise album of covers; and they keep making music videos starring other famous people we really love. And with their newest record the Black Album out in stores now, they aren’t going away anytime soon. But their presence isn’t just limited to this world. Now they’ve gone virtual, which is why you can now visit (and we swear this is totally real) Weezer Island in Fortnite.
Players can head to an entire amusement park level full of mini-games dedicated to the band, in what would have felt like the weirdest cross promotion ever even a few years ago. Now though? Sure, why not. When they’re singing barbershop quartet versions of “Buddy Holly” on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon this isn’t that weird. So what will you find on Weezer Island (in the sun)? It features the band’s flying “W” logo throughout and has four songs from the Black Album playing. This version of the Matrix is really freaking weird. Actually it might be downright broken, because forget Fortnite‘s Weezer Island, the algorithm is just doing Mad Libs now. That’s the only way to explain how we live in a reality where this sentence makes total sense: “Weezer, The Roots, and Jimmy Fallon played a-ha’s ‘Take On Me’ with classroom instruments while dressed like A Flock of Seagulls.”
There’s a whole generation that has no idea that at the end of the 20th century no one was sure if we’d ever see Weezer again. Now the question is when won’t we see them?Featured Image: Weezer/Team Cre8 Stream
