Kristen Stewart Finds Trouble Under the Sea in UNDERWATER Trailer

There are many things that lurk underneath the ocean. Most of them are things we’d rather not come into contact with, and the new trailer for 20th Century Fox’s Underwater reminds us exactly why we’d prefer to stay above ground.

Directed by William Eubank, whose resume includes the 2014 under-the-radar space thriller The Signal, the thriller focuses on a group of underwater researchers who descend 7 miles below the surface and 5,000 miles from land to spend a month drilling into the bottom of the ocean. As one would expect, everything goes well until it doesn’t, with an earthquake rocking their subterranean laboratory and a realization that their digging has led to something deadly being unleashed.

The only way to get to safety? Walk across the bottom of the ocean with insufficient oxygen, all while knowing some kind of monster or alien sea creature is lurking in the shadows, just waiting to sink its tentacles into an unsuspecting human. Fortunately, Kristen Stewart is rocking her best Ripley look for the occasion, which is entirely appropriate since the trailer gives off a strong vibe of Alien meets The Abyss with a side of Leviathan. In fact, while there are multiple horror films that come to mind while watching this trailer, it can probably be summed up with the description “Alien, but have all the horror and insanity happen under water.”

Although the trailer announces a 2020 release date, the movie was actually shot in early 2017. Regardless, we’re glad that KStew is finally getting a chance to show off more of her acting chops while looking so badass, and from what we can see from some of the underwater shots, this looks like it has the potential to be a decently freaky thriller.

Underwater stars Kristen Stewart, T.J. Miller, John Gallagher Jr., Vincent Cassell, and Jessica Henwick, and you can watch all the terror for yourself January 10, 2020.
