TMNT ‘Coming Out of Their Shells’ Figures are SDCC Exclusives

If you grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, you remember every popular cartoon show had an accompanying live-tour. There was the He-Man and She-Ra Power Tour, the Thundercats Live! show, and of course, Snoopy on Ice. But one of the most popular of the era was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Coming Out of Their Shells Tour, which played around the United States and parts of Europe in 1990.

With a $20 million dollar sponsorship from Pizza Hut, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Coming Out of Their Shells Tour actually got a big A-List opening date at Radio City Music Hall. They even had a live Pay-Per-View event. That show eventually came out on VHS, and millions of TMNT obsessed kids all over the world ate it up like musical pizza.

The “band” showcased Donatello on keyboard; Leonardo played a one-string bass guitar and did back-up vocals; Michelangelo rocked out on guitar as well as sang; and Raphael was the band’s frontman, not to mention drummer and saxophonist. Of course, Splinter, April O’Neil, and Shredder got in on some of the musical action too.

These days, most fans realize the whole show was just capitalizing on peak Turtle-mania in 1990, and is mostly remembered by TMNT fans as a way of getting their parent’s money. But just because it was a crass money grabbing event, that certainly doesn’t stop ’90s kids from being nostalgic for it. Which is why the folks at NECA Toys are releasing these special collector’s set of four figures, all just in time to celebrate the tour’s 30th anniversary.

This special set will be available in stores on July 23rd, along with a TMNT accessory pack of Turtle swag like a tour t-shirt and guitar picks. This will set you back  $24.99. The actual TMNT Musical Mutagen Tour set retails for $124.99. Both of these will also be available on Target.com the same day. For overseas customers, they will be available to purchase over at The NECA Store.
