The Walmart Chicken Purse Is What the People Want

Earlier this month, Walmart celebrated National Chicken Month with a silly new product, the Walmart Chicken Purse. The savory accessory inspired by the company’s rotisserie chicken came in both Traditional and Lemon Pepper “flavors.” With a price tag of $5.97 per bag (the same price as an actual chicken you can eat), these purses seemed like a fun little product that might make for a fun gift or impulse buy for dedicated Walmart shoppers or kitsch fans. These seemed like the kind of thing you might purchase on a whim. Instead, it sold out in just 90 minutes. That prompted a quick restock… Which also sold out. All of which proves one indisputable fact: people sure do like buying stuff!

Walmart’s limited-edition chicken purses were a hot commodity. Hungry customers immediately snatched up both batches. Why? Uh, why not? Right? I mean, who isn’t eager to devour a novelty replica, synthetic leather bag that looks exactly like the kind of sack used for rotisserie chicken? Certainly the answer is “plenty of people,” but the opposite is also true; otherwise, these would not be sold out. Again.

It’s not clear if Walmart will release a third serving of its Chicken Purses. However, some accessories are still currently available. For the same price as a purse, you can still snag a Traditional or Lemon Pepper bag charm. And you can season them up with $4 dollar Great Value charms of Hot Sauce and Lemon Pepper seasoning.

We’re honestly shocked those haven’t sold out, too. Who gets an entrée without sides? Who buys a Chicken Purse, either sincerely or as a joke, without fully committing to the bit?

Those are rhetorical questions. You don’t have to send us any letters. You can just enjoy your purchase without explaining it to us. Besides, we already know enough: people love to buy stuff no matter what it might be.
