THE TESTAMENTS Trailer Is a Brutal Sequel to THE HANDMAID’S TALE

Hulu released a disturbingly thrilling trailer for a new series this morning. Set within the world of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments follows a group of young women at a rigorous preparatory school where obedience is brutally enforced. Coming off the high of One Battle After Another, Chase Infiniti stars in the dystopian series. The Testaments trailer is one dark and twisted maze, and we’re here for it.

Deceptively set to the tune of “Dreams” by The Cranberries, the trailer reveals a chilling adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel. Girls in uniform, structured days, etc. We see Hannah’s (Infiniti) dollhouse act as a symbol for the brutal totalitarian society. It flips on its head as soon as we see men hanging from out of frame, the girls not blinking twice. Nurturing the next generation of women is Aunt Lydia’s Elite Preparatory School for Future Wives. The school enforces discipline through a strict order of rules justified by divine intervention. Set five years after The Handmaid’s Tale, Infiniti plays a teenage Hannah.

When a new girl (Lucy Halliday) arrives from outside of Gilead’s borders, Hannah begins to see things under a different light. Together, their bond becomes the catalyst that changes everything. The trailer carries an impressively dark tone throughout, reminiscent of the original series. I had goosebumps.

The trailer confirms Ann Dowd’s return as Aunt Lydia. The actor won an Emmy for her performance in the original series. The Testaments also stars Mabel Li, Amy Seimetz, Brad Alexander, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Birva Pandya, and Kira Guloien.

It truly is one battle after another, indeed, for young actress Chase Infiniti. After her incredible performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Oscar-nominated film (her first feature film, by the way), it is a treat to see her back again for a dark dystopian drama. The first three episodes of The Testaments drop on Hulu on Wednesday, April 8. The rest of the season will follow a weekly release schedule.
