THE SEA BEAST Trailer Promises a Fantastical Adventure

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times. (And I really do think I’ve said it a million times.) The ocean is terrifying. It’s massive, dark, and full of creatures that put some of the greatest sci-fi writers to shame. But it’s also a place of wonder and adventure. It’s quite the dichotomy of terror and beauty. A fact the new trailer for Netflix’s next animated feature film, The Sea Beast, fully captures. It will turn the open seas into a fantastical journey to the places beyond the known world.

The Sea Beast comes from Academy Award-winner Chris Williams (Moana, Big Hero Six). The streaming site says the film “takes us to where the map ends, and the true adventure begins.” This trailer shows that adventure will include an unlikely member of the crew. Here’s the official synopsis from Netflix:

In an era when terrifying beasts roamed the seas, monster hunters were celebrated heroes – and none were more beloved than the great Jacob Holland. But when young Maisie Brumble stows away on his fabled ship, he’s saddled with an unexpected ally. Together they embark on an epic journey into uncharted waters and make history.

While this classic premise of fun and fear on the high seas looks like fun, the real standout of this trailer is the animation. It’s stunning, in large part because it doesn’t look photorealistic. That only adds to the fantasy of these dreamlike worlds full of giant seashells and mystical creatures. This isn’t the sort of place you’ll find on any map. That just makes us wish we could visit there even more. Even if the ocean is terrifying.

The Sea Beast stars Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Dan Stevens, and Kathy Burke. It sets sails for Netflix this summer, July 8.
