Only 25 theaters in the U.S. are able to show The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm. (You can find the list here) Most modern movie theaters use digital projectors. The format requires rare, enormous projectors that feed film in horizontally. Unlike other film types, this creates a tall, almost square look that captures the whole scene. Because of the large surface area of the projected film, the quality of the image is much higher than in other formats.
Film junkies consider IMAX 70mm to be the ultimate way to view Christopher Nolan films, specifically, and especially The Odyssey. Plenty of theaters, though, show the movie in IMAX digital, which is generally less expensive to see and captures an almost-as-tall, slightly wider aspect ratio.

Nolan made history with The Odyssey, and it became the first feature film shot entirely on IMAX cameras. Previously, the large, antiquated cameras were too loud to use for filming dialogue. In the past, many IMAX movies have also had to switch back and forth periodically from a standard aspect ratio. Now, Nolan solved that issue, commissioning special equipment from IMAX to make it finally possible for a seamless 70mm with IMAX-recorded dialogue for The Odyssey. And we guess that makes it the movie to watch in IMAX 70mm.
After just 12 days in theaters, The Odyssey had grossed $700 million at the box office. This is not the first time IMAX has extended Nolan’s film showings due to extreme success, with Oppenheimer’s run extending twice.
