Chris Evans Steals the Show in Trailer for Rian Johnson’s KNIVES OUT

Rian Johnson may have stirred the pot with his last feature film–a little movie called Star Wars: The Last Jedi–but regardless of where you stand on that film, there’s no denying Johnson’s passion or talent.

His other three feature films–Brick, The Brothers Bloom, and Looper–all dabble in different genres, and his zest for film history is on full display on his personal Twitter account. Johnson is a cinema lover first and foremost, and that love shines through in this first trailer for his next film, Knives Out.

We’ve been eagerly anticipating this film since we first heard the cast lineup: Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer. But now that the trailer has arrived, we have even more reason to be excited. This thing looks like an Agatha Christie novel come to life, with the bonus meme-ability of Chris Evans telling everyone to “eat shit.” Behold!

Knives Out tells the story of a family gathering thrown into disarray after the death of their patriarch (Plummer). Detectives Troy Archer (Lakeith Stanfield) and Benoit Blanc (Craig) are hired to investigate the possible crime, only to find a family home loaded with dark secrets. Ana de Armas, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, and Don Johnson also star.

At the Lionsgate presentation at CinemaCon earlier this year, Rian Johnson noted the Agatha Christie influence, and said the film has a “Hitchcock thriller-type twist.” Judging from this sleek, smooth-talking trailer–which makes good use of a Christie-style paperback font and magnifying glass–he nailed the aesthetic on this one.

We’re also happy to see the marketing isn’t straying away from associating Johnson with The Last Jedi; despite the film’s controversy, its boldness deserves to be highlighted with the rest of his work. If anything, it signifies confidence in the project being put forward.

We can’t wait to see how Knives Out twists a knife in the mystery genre when it comes out November 27, 2019.
