THE EXORCIST Sequel Loses Its 2025 Release Date and Director

The Exorcist: Believer came out in 2023 and it was… a movie. On top of a meh box office run, critics and fans of the franchise alike slammed the film, calling it unimaginative and disappointing, among other things. (Both of those words are nice ways to sum it up, tbh.) Nevertheless, Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures already had plans for The Exorcist: Deceiver, a sequel set to hit theaters in April 2025 with David Gordon Green returning as a director. In a move that is perhaps ordained by ethereal powers, The Exorcist: Deceiver has lost its release date and director in one fell swoop, which isn’t good for this sequel.

This news isn’t that shocking, honestly. Prior to The Exorcist: Believer’s release, Green himself noted that he may not return for a sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will focus his attention on his production of Nutcrackers starring Ben Stiller and season four of HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones. I don’t know much about the former but The Righteous Gemstones is an excellent and increasingly well-received series. So his choice to walk away from this film makes a lot of sense. We will have to wait and see who will be brave enough to take on this Excorcist sequel movie. All I can say to them is good luck.

The Exorcist: Deceiver had a theatrical release date of April 18, 2025. But the release date for this Exorcist sequel is no longer happening. In fact, there is no new release date for it at all. The Exorcist: Deceiver is no longer on Universal’s release calendar. The film was in early development stages and now, without a director, there will be some backpedaling. In fact, the studio can backpedal to the point that it no longer exists as a concept. That’s what fans of the franchise truly deserve.
