The Best Things on Netflix Streaming This Month

Welcome to our new look The Best Things Streaming column where each month we’ll run down the best of what’s hitting your fave streaming channel! This month Netflix is decking the halls with a selection of unexpected originals, with an Oscar-bait indie darling, a highly-anticipated video game adaptation, some gorgeous new anime, a returning titan of meta-dramedy and an apparent spiritual sequel to The Vampire Diaries.

V Wars
Ian Somerhalder looks shocked

Ian Somerhalder just can’t seem to escape bloodsuckers. The Vampire Diaries star is back fighting the nocturnal beasts again in this new Netflix series which is based on the comic book of the same name. The official Netflix description hints at the interpersonal drama that will drive the epic postapocalyptic show. “A fast-spreading disease that turns victims into blood-sucking fiends pits two best friends against each other in a fight for humanity’s future.”

Marriage Story (Dec 6th)
Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver reflect on their dissolving marriage in Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story

Marriage Story has been winning over critics on the festival season all year. Noah Baumbach’s beautiful and heartbreaking take on the realities of divorce is hitting Netflix this month and according to our very own Lindsey Romain “It’s an intimate, detail-rich film anchored by two career-best performances by its leads: Adam Driver as Charlie and Scarlett Johansson as Nicole, two artists whose visions and dreams fleetingly align, but are really just passing ships in the night. Marriage Story finds them both mourning what could have been and what will never be. The result is a portrait of a relationship that feels frighteningly real; every bump and bruise. It’s a staggering film, one of the best of the year, and maybe the best-ever cinematic depiction of divorce thanks to how honestly and fairly it examines every angle.”

The Witcher (Dec 20th)
Henry Cavill as The Witcher

With the review embargo held until the morning of the release, it looks like The Witcher will likely contain some big twists, but as fans of the game know it’s really all about sexy old Geralt and his quest. In case you haven’t met the hulking figure yet here’s the official description. The series revolves around the eponymous “witcher“, Geralt of Rivia. In Sapkowski’s works, “witchers” are beast hunters who develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle wild beasts and monsters. ”

Carole & Tuesday Part 2 (Dec 24th)

If you haven’t watched Netflix’s incredible musical anime Carole and Tuesday yet then you better go and watch it right now!! Also if you have then you’ll be happy to know it’s returning near the end of the month. Beautiful, heartfelt, and sweet the story centers on two young women who live in the futuristic cityscape of Mars and strike up a friendship over their love of music. One of the loveliest new anime of the year this is must-watch for music lovers and animation fans.

Following Joe and his obsessive relationships and murderous tendencies, the Lifetime show floundered on its original channel before its dark humor and grim exploration of toxic relationships and nice guy culture took the internet by storm and after the shocking twist ending we can’t wait to see what happens next!
