One of the standout characters in Thor: Ragnarok was Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. Although she sat out Infinity War, in Endgame they crown her the king of New Asgard on Earth. And soon, Valkyrie returns in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder this summer. But in a new interview with W Magazine, Tessa Thompson teased some interesting things about Valkyrie’s superpowers. And how they’ve expanded in the upcoming movie. So what powers will Valkyrie have in the MCU? Here’s what Thompson had to say, when asked about her character’s power set.
“She has weird skills, to be honest. She can sense when someone is close to death, and she takes them into Valhalla, which is essentially the afterlife. Also, she can revive people. But when she revives people, sometimes she ends up in their body. It’s a weird thing. It can be quite erotic. And then she has superhuman strength and is essentially a god.”
The Comics Origins of Valkyrie’s Powers
Some of this should sound familiar to Marvel Comics fans. And some of it is totally new. Let’s start with the familiar. In the comics, Valkyrie has some of the powers Thompson described. She can sense when someone is close to death, even if she doesn’t know how and why said individual is dying. All members of the Valkyrior escort fallen warriors who are worthy into the halls of Valhalla. They are all super strong (but not quite immortal).

However, the whole “reviving people and living in their body” aspect of Valkyrie’s powers seems to be created just for the MCU films. Of course, Tessa Thompson’s version of Valkyrie is almost a totally unique creation from her comics counterpart. Brunnhilde was the name of the comics version, who lived among mortals under the name Barbara Norris. Although her spirit could possess a human body, they weren’t the bodies of anyone that she resurrected. Since we haven’t seen these powers yet in the MCU, we assume they will surface in Thor: Love and Thunder. Could Valkyrie have a role in resurrecting and possessing people in Thor’s next film? Will it be…erotic? We’ll just have to wait and see how Valkyrie uses her powers in the fourth Thor movie.
MCU Valkyrie, Comics Valkyrie, and Their Powers
Compared with her comic book counterpart, The MCU’s Valkyrie doesn’t have a real civilian name that we even know of yet. In actuality, she seems to be a totally different member of the Valkyrior. That said, a version that looks like the Thompson iteration joined the Marvel Universe in 2018, after the success of Ragnarok. Perhaps in this case the MCU Valkyrie’s powers will inform her comic book counterpart.
