STREET FIGHTER’s Trailer Pays Homage to Iconic Chun-Li Scene

Last week, we got many incredible tidbits about some of our favorite upcoming films, thanks to CinemaCon. The convention dazzled Las Vegas with lots of announcements, celebrity sightings, and a few trailers, too. One trailer that made waves on the internet is for Street Fighter, Paramount Pictures and Legendary’s upcoming live-action film based on the famed video game franchise. It had the perfect blend of action, humor, and loads of Easter eggs to satisfy fan. Speaking of Easter eggs and references, the Street Fighter trailer pays homage to an iconic Chun-Li scene.

At around the 1:50 mark, we see Chun-Li entering the shower, which is certainly a deepcut reference to Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. In that 1994 film, Chun-Li takes a shower and gets ready for bed in her high rise apartment when Vega hits her with a sneak attack.

It results in one of the most intense Street Fighter scenes ever, with Chun-Li besting Vega by kicking him through a wall. However, her own injuries leave her in a coma. It’s a brutal and classic battle between the pair, and those who love Street Fighter will never, ever deny ourselves the gift of a Chun-Li reference.

Legendary/Paramount Pictures

It remains to be seen what will actually go down in the Street Fighter movie. But, considering that director Kitao Sakurai is a huge fan of the games, we are sure that it will be just as epic. We did see Vega go through a wall in Street Fighter‘s previous teaser, so maybe that means we are getting a variation of this scene. Either way, we are ready to put our quarters up when Street Fighter hits theaters on October 16.
