Every Star Wars movie expands the galaxy far, far away by introducing new characters, places, and technologies for fans to obsess over. So while The Rise of Skywalker will conclude the story of the most famous Force user family in the universe, it will also grow the world in ways that will continue the story forever. Now we know one way it will do that, as Lucasfilm has formally introduced a new alien we will meet in the movie. What he does could help explain that intriguing shot of C-3PO from the last trailer. Meet Babu Frik.
Babu Frik is “the tiny Anzellan droidsmith” who “works among the Spice Runners of Kijimi and can reprogram or modify virtually any droid — regardless of the security measures protecting its systems.” Kijimi is a new snow-dusted planet that is home to the Thieves’ Quarter, a place Variety says “has become very profitable for scoundrels to avoid picking a side during the escalating war between Leia’s Resistance and Kylo Ren’s forces.” It’s also where Keri Russell’s all new character Zorii Bliss resides.

Babu Frik’s job description could prove relevant for any number of droids, but it could be related to the shot of C-3PO with red eyes from The Rise of Skywalker trailer that premiered at D23. Zorii Bliss has a past connection with Poe Dameron. Is it possible Poe will bring Threepio to Kijimi where Babu Frik will reprogram him? Will that actually be part of the Resistance’s plan, or will the protocol droid be transformed into an unwitting enemy?
We’ll get the answer to all of those questions soon when Star Wars ends the Skywalker family saga. But Babu Frik and Kijimi will be a part of our lives for a long time.
