THE RISE OF KYLO REN Comic Will Give the Knights of Ren a Backstory

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in 2012, they hit the reset button on Star Wars tie-in materials. Any previously released books, comics, and video games were renamed Star Wars Legends, as the company created their own official canon in the lead up to Episode VII, The Force Awakens. In doing so, they opened doors for brand new characters, letting Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, BB-8, and others grow on the page before and after hitting the big screen.

But there’s one new character who has remained mostly in the new canon shadows: Kylo Ren, a.k.a. Ben Solo, the son of Han and Leia who was seduced by dark Force-user Snoke and brought to the dark side to serve with the tyrannical First Order. Kylo’s name has popped up in the occasional novel, and his threat has been felt from afar, but to date, he hasn’t been explored as the main character of his own canon novel or comic.

All of that is about to change. At today’s Lucasfilm Publishing panel at San Diego Comic-Con, author Charles Soule announced that he’s working on an official Kylo Ren limited-series comic, The Rise of Kylo Ren. Better yet? The comic isn’t just about Kylo Ren, but will also finally shed light on his association with the mysterious Knights of Ren.

To date, we know very little about the Knights. Are they Kylo’s former classmates at Luke’s Jedi Academy, who went rogue when Ben Solo turned dark? Are they an order of Dark Side obsessives who follow Kylo blindly as he wages personal wars? And where the hell were they in The Last Jedi?

Looks like all of that and more will be answered, and soon. According to the panel, The Rise of Kylo Ren will hit shelves this December, before the release of The Rise of Skywalker. We’ll keep you posted with official dates as they become available.
