STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS Casts Bones and Sulu for Finale

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season four may be months away from its premiere, but the series just wrapped its fifth and final season. And as the producers promised, the final episode will dovetail right into the start of the original 1960s series. According to Variety, the final episode of Strange New Worlds will introduce the two major remaining Star Trek: TOS characters, with Thomas Jane (The Mist) as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, and Kai Murakami as Enterprise helmsman Hikaru Sulu.

Some of you may be wondering where Chekov is. However, Ensign Chekov only joined Star Trek in its second season. So, according to Trek canon, he shouldn’t be there for the beginning of Captain Kirk’s command. In recent months, Strange New Worlds producer Akiva Goldsman has expressed his desire for a Star Trek: Year One with Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk, along with Ethan Peck as Spock, Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura, Martin Quinn as Mr. Scott, and Jess Bush as Nurse Chapel. Now with our new Bones and Sulu, we have all the ingredients to make that happen.

It may be some time before we see Bones and Sulu on the Enterprise bridge, however. The fifth and final season of Strange New Worlds likely won’t drop until 2027 at the earliest. Paramount is currently in a state of flux, with new owners and the future of Star Trek somewhat uncertain. We will get at least two seasons of the upcoming Starfleet Academy series. But there is nothing officially on the docket to replace Strange New Worlds. While Star Trek: Year One is a possibility, we’d be surprised if it were more than just a limited series. Still, it’s nice to know we’ll have the classic, original crew together again. Even if it is just for that one episode.
