Spotify Now Allows You to Search for a Song by Lyrics

We’ve all been there. Suddenly, we have song lyrics stuck in our head that just won’t go away. Maybe it’s an earworm from a long forgotten tune from our childhood. Or it’s from something you recently heard on the radio. But just what the heck is the name of that song? Modern technology has brought us all a solution to this problem. Thanks to The Verge we’ve learned that you can now skip going right to Google for lyrics. Instead you can search for a particular song by its lyrics on Spotify on iOS and Android.

All one has to do is type in the lyrics you remember into Spotify’s search bar. Then the app will give you a selection of songs that match. A tune that might be the one you’re searching for will have a tag that says “Lyrics match.” Hopefully, the song lyrics you remember are not “oh baby, baby,” because you might end up with a lot of matches to scroll through. Spotify designer Lin Wang explained the feature on Twitter:

Although this is a new feature for Spotify, this is a function that Apple Music has had for two years now. Not to mention, another lyrics-related feature arrived on Spotify recently. The company introduced real-time lyrics provided by Musixmatch to 26 different markets in June.

Of course, when you hear a song playing somewhere and want to know the name, we still think that nothing beats good ‘ol Shazam. How many times have you been in the grocery store or some other retail location and a song you like comes on? And then you hold the phone in the air hoping the app recognizes it? And who else gets weird stares from other customers as you do this? No? Maybe it’s just us.
