When we were all little kids, our earliest “science is cool” discoveries usually revolve around magnets. After all, everyone had a magnet or two lying around their house. For that kid in us all, the YouTube channel Magnet Tricks showcases tons of videos showing off all the nifty things that magnets can do, and even the natural art they can help to create. And some of these are pure art.
Case in point, their latest video (discovered via Laughing Squid) shows soap bubbles crystallizing atop a levitating magnet. And it really is a gorgeous thing to watch, making one think of a planet being born. A planet entirely formed out of crystal. The video was shot in the dead of winter in Finland, where temperatures can drop as low as -50°C. You can watch the full video right here.
The video’s description, from Magnet Tricks, says, “This year we have had amazing winter weather, last year there basically was no snow or sub-zero temperatures where I live in South-Western Finland. First day of filming it was -14 C, 2 m/s wind, second day -20 C, 2 m/s wind. The wind wasn’t too much of a problem as I had a little bit of shelter from it.”
Magnet Tricks
This isn’t the first time that the Magnet Tricks channel has done a frozen soap bubble video. Back in 2017, they uploaded a video of a soap bubble icing up while levitating on a floating magnet. This video was all shot in real time. Another icy cool video on their channel shows a time lapse of Theoria Apophasis’ magnetic egg experiment. This one shows a grade N40 30mm neodymium sphere magnet hanging in distilled water while it freezes. For more cool videos like these, be sure to head on over to the Magnet Tricks channel.
