If you’ve been longing for clothing that represents your passions for science, technology, math, and more, get ready to fill your wardrobe. Svaha is all about STEAM fashion–that includes Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. They also focus on celebrating women in all fields. Yes, it’s glorious and so necessary. Nerdist has the exclusive first look at a few new Svaha designs, including this spectacular Ruth Bader Ginsburg dress.
SvahaThe design features the recognizable face of the Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Appropriately, the dress incorporates an early ’90s aesthetic, which is on point since Ginsburg took the oath of office in 1993. This dress is perfect for Women’s History Month (we’re celebrating for 20 more days) or for any day, any time.
Svaha launched in 2015. The company’s founder, Jaya Iyer, wanted to find apparel for her space-obsessed daughter, Svaha. Iyer was dismayed when she was unable to find an astronaut shirt for her daughter, or for that matter any science or technology themed clothes. So Iyer took her knowledge of the apparel industry—she has a Ph.D in fashion merchandising and formerly worked as an apparel buyer at ThinkGeek—and started her own company for STEAM fashion. With a goal of smashing gender stereotypes, Iyer came up with a line of STEAM-themed products.
SvahaIyer launched a Kickstarter to kick off her STEAM fashion dreams, and she named her company after her daughter. Their offerings have resonated with consumer. Iyer told Nerdist, “We’ve been flooded with messages from Svaha customers who love being able to show their passion about STEAM fields through their clothing and it is the best feeling ever! They also love having pockets to keep their keys in and not having to shop in a ‘plus size’ department. I’m so happy to be able to make a difference and change the gender stereotype perception even a tiny little bit.”
SvahaThe company’s core mission emphasizes empowering adults and kids to be whatever they want to be. Therefore, don’t dismiss it as “just fashion.” The clothes we see on store shelves send a message just like advertisements do. For example, if a girl doesn’t see that astronaut t-shirt she wants except over in the boys clothing section, she may believe girls shouldn’t be astronauts. By putting a plethora of STEAM fashion on the market, Svaha boosts the message that anyone can be anything. After all, we need more of companies crushing gender norms.
With ensembles that are both stylish and smart, Svaha catches your eye. Two other new products coming up (pictured above and below) including a multiplying bunnies dress for Easter and science cats leggings.
