Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the live-action version of an oversized Marvel Team-Up Annual, featuring Spidey crossing paths with not one, but four MCU heroes. But one more MCU character, played by someone very well known, almost found themselves in the film too. And they even shot their scene. However, director Destin Daniel Cretton cut it out of the final film. While appearing at Galaxycon recently, Ahsoka and Sin City actress Rosario Dawson confirmed that she filmed a cameo in BND as her Marvel character Claire Temple. Sadly, it wound up on the cutting room floor. Here’s what she had to say about the experience:
I tell you my post was already ready with my BTS, with my grandson wearing all his Spider-Man stuff cause he loves Spider-Man. Then I got the email, so yeah, I’m a reject of Spider-Man and I’m a reject of the Devil’s Rejects.
What Dawson refers to here is a cameo scene filmed 20 years ago as a nurse for Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects. Now, a different nurse character of Dawson’s never made it into another film. For those unfamiliar, Dawson’s character of Claire Temple appeared across several Marvel Netflix shows. She was a practicing nurse who secretly helped injured vigilantes. She’s a composite of Claire Temple, a medical doctor in Luke Cage comics, and an obscure character from a series from the early ’70s called The Night Nurse. That series centered on a nurse named Linda Carter who treated injured superheroes. For obvious reasons relating to a famous DC heroine, Marvel changed the name of its Night Nurse to Claire Temple.

Dawson’s character appeared in two seasons of Daredevil, as well as Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. She somehow didn’t appear on The Punisher, although it stands to reason that Claire Temple would know him. Yes, it’s a bummer that her cameo didn’t make it into Brand New Day. But we imagine it’ll be a deleted scene on the eventual Blu-ray. Who knows, maybe they even insert it back into the film? Claire Temple was a very cool character, one we hope finds a home somewhere in the MCU again. If not in Brand New Day, then maybe in a future Spider-Man film down the line.
