The team behind Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals have teamed up again for a new HBO series, The Righteous Gemstones, about a dysfunctional televangelist family with a “long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work—all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” The first trailer landed online today and it looks like a raucous, irreverent, and hilarious time – exactly what we’d expect given the talent involved.
John Goodman, Danny McBride, and Adam Devine are three members of the Gemstone family. They’re looking to expand upon their fortune at whatever cost, even if it means moral corruption. Goodman plays the patriarch Eli, and McBride, Devine, and Edi Patterson his three children. Cassidy Freeman, Tim Baltz, Tony Cavalero, GregAlan Williams, and Walton Goggins will also star in the series.
McBride, Jody Hill, and David Gordon Green are producing the show; the three worked together on the aforementioned Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals, and McBride and Green also recently collaborated on 2018’s horror hit Halloween. Green is known for his directorial work on films like Pineapple Express, Your Highness, and The Sitter. This is the producing trio’s third TV collaboration with HBO.
The Righteous Gemstones is one part of HBO’s post-Game of Thrones slate, which the cable company has been heavily promoting during the massively successful fantasy series’ final season. It will join Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen, a new adaptation of Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, the American remake of Euphoria, the second season of Big Little Lies and The Young Pope, and new comedy series Los Espookys and Mrs. Fletcher on the summer lineup.
No word on an exact release date for The Righteous Gemstones, but we’ll have our eye on this one. We can’t wait to see what sort of divine magic this group of talent will conjure together.
