One scene in Resident Evil Requiem is giving players with arachnophobia the heebie jeebies. About half-way through the latest addition to the horror game franchise is a creepy, hyper-realistic spider boss players must cross. “Genuinely the worst experience I’ve ever had in a video game,” said one fan. According to plentiful Reddit threads, yes, it really is that bad. Oddly enough, a saving grace comes in the form of a happy choo choo train. Be warned, full spoilers for Resident Evil Requiem ahead.

Resident Evil Requiem came out just a few days ago. Even so, there’s already been heaps of talk over the anticipated game. Specifically, just how terrifying is the aforementioned giant spider? Requiem has a giant spider as a major boss fight in Raccoon City, which is about halfway through the game. Not only is it super big, but it’s super realistic, too. And fast. It’s a combo that has players with arachnophobia scared to play the game.
“It’s horrible,” answered one fan, Tasty_James, discussing how bad Resident Evil Requiem is for archanophobes. “As someone who can’t get through the Aragog/Shelob scenes in their respective [Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings] films, this has been a f***ing nightmare. It’s huge, hairy, detailed, and f***ing fast… Genuinely the most terrifying experience I’ve ever had during any videogame (and I could probably expand that to all media as well, tbh).”
Requiem doesn’t have an arachnophobia mode, so you can’t really skip the creature jumping out at you. On the bright side, it’s a relatively short section that’s fairly predictable and easy to beat. And apart from a few other tiny baby spiders, the arachnophobic nightmare is over once you kill it. Regardless, Resident Evil Requiem players have been going to desperate lengths to avoid the scene, even purposely playing without their glasses or recruiting a friend to take over for them. Fear not. A saving grace in a most unexpected form. NexusMods hosts a mod that replaces the giant arachnid with Thomas the Tank Engine’s face. Pick your poison.
Thomas the Tank Engine Can Save You!
I don’t have arachnophobia, so I can’t say for certain which option is truly scarier. What I will say is that I definitely wouldn’t want to wake up next to either of them. The mod isn’t available on consoles, but PC players have the option to avoid the creepy crawly if they wish. Or, you know, just take off your glasses and do it blind. Resident Evil Requiem is available for purchase now.
