Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and starring Ryan Gosling, is everything we go to the movies for. It’s smart, funny, heartwarming, and manages to still give us a jaw-dropping sci-fi spectacle. Not to mention, the adorable alien known as Rocky is already an instant icon. Perhaps most importantly, it proves that a non-franchise IP can still draw crowds into movie theaters. But if you missed seeing the film in a glorious IMAX presentation, we have some good news for you. Project Hail Mary will officially return to IMAX 70mm for a one-week-only engagement, starting on Friday, April 17.
Project Hail Mary had to give up its IMAX screens for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie recently. So Mario and Luigi undercut a lot of fans who wanted to see the movie again in the best theatrical format possible. Maybe those two thought Rocky was one of Bowser’s minions? But at least for one week, fans can re-experience Project Hail Mary with nearly two hours of expanded aspect ratio. Lord and Miller’s sci-fi film is already the most successful film that Amazon/MGM Studios has released. And it shows few signs of slowing down.

In the film, based on the novel by Andy Weir, Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a schoolteacher who wakes up from an induced coma on an interstellar spaceship. And he wakes up with no memory of how he got there. Before long, Grace realizes he’s the sole survivor of a three-person crew sent on a “Hail Mary” mission to save Earth’s sun from extinction.
Luckily, he makes a friend from a distant alien civilization during the mission. And just like that, Project Hail Mary becomes one of the best human/alien buddy movies ever made. Grace and Rocky now give Han and Chewie a run for their money. You can buy tickets for Project Hail Mary in IMAX now.
