Pixar’s Mysterious Next Film Is Titled SOUL

What with the fourth chapter of Pixar’s tentpole franchise Toy Story approaching theaters to waves of cautious optimism, not to mention the recent first glimpse at the forthcoming  Onward raising a few eyebrows, the animation studio is inspiring quite a few feelings of late. Granted, such is their M.O., and the cryptic announcement of the title of and scant details about their next project is no doubt evoking waves of curiosity. On June 19, Pixar gave Twitter its first taste of Soul, a film described as “a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms” and which promises to “discover the answers to life’s most important questions.” All together now, let us enjoy a hearty, “Hmmm!”

In a supplemental press release, Pixar adds, “Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you… YOU?” suggesting that the “soul” at the center of the story might quite literally be just that. Given that the film comes from director Pete Docter, who helmed the existentially inclined Inside Out (on top of Up and Monsters, Inc), we shouldn’t be afraid to indulge this wonder.

Soul, which thus far has revealed no more in the way of visuals than its title design (which is in step with Pixar’s traditional calligraphic fashion), will hit theaters on June 19, 2020, a year out from the revelation of this heap (or gaping black hole) of details.

While much of its summary is paralyzingly vague, one aspect strikes a chord: New York City. While Pixar’s bread and butter is the realm of total fantasy, the studio has, to date, explored real world locations including Paris, Mexico, northern South America, and Australia (well, the oceans surrounding Australia, at least).

Pixar’s take on the verve of New York City could well be an enchanting ordeal, especially if, as we’re deducing from the title alone, the film will dive into the soul music scene that thrived in the Big Apple beginning in the ’50s and ’60s. In short, we have lots left to learn about Pixar’s Soul, but we’re intrigued so far!
