Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Soul became Pixar’s first film to debut on Disney+. It’s unlikely that the studio’s future features will premiere on the streaming service. But subscribers who enjoyed the chance to watch something new from the comfort of their own homes will soon get that chance again. Pixar Popcorn will launch with ten short films featuring beloved characters from some of the studio’s most popular movies. And based on the first trailer, it’s going to be a tasty little treat for fans.
The all new Pixar Popcorn will premiere exclusively at Disney+ on Friday, January 22, with ten original animated shorts. That will include stories based on Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Cars, The Incredibles, Coco, and Soul.
The new short collection’s first trailer and poster show which characters will get a chance to shine in a mini spotlight. Shorts include new adventures in the Cars universe and with the Toy Story gang (sans Woody… aww). Toy Story 4‘s Ducky and Bunny, voiced by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, returning for some carnival fun. We’ll even get to spend more time with Nemo’s forgetful friend Dory. Plus we’ll head back to the barbershop for a fresh cut from Soul‘s Dez, and spend time in Coco‘s afterlife.
Disney
Pixar has a long history producing shorts, which date back to the studio’s founding. These still play before each featured film release. The studio also launched its great original Shortcuts program in 2019. Those shorts can already be found on Disney+, as can “Forky Asks a Question.” The series, featuring quick Q&As with Toy Story 4‘s Forky, won an Emmy last year for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program.
So, sure; it’s unlikely any original Pixar films will debut on Disney+ soon. But Pixar Popcorn should satiate us until theaters reopen.
