The rebirth of Penny Dreadful is nearly upon us, as City of Angels is set to debut on Showtime on Sunday, April 26. Until now, we’ve only learned a few things about this new iteration of the richly Gothic series. We know the show takes place in the 1930s with an emphasis on the city of Los Angeles and its racial tensions at that time. But thanks to a new pair of videos from Showtime, we’re getting a bigger glimpse into City of Angels.
The first video shines the spotlight on Natalie Dormer, who reveals she’s actually playing three characters in this series. The former Game of Thrones star plays Magda, the self-described “supernatural antagonist of the show.” But Magda really has three faces, all of which seem to be agents of chaos in the larger story. One is the mousy Alex, the other the seemingly innocent Elsa, and finally the vivacious Rio. Through make-up and hair changes plus different accents and attitudes, Dormer seems to have landed the juiciest role of the Penny Dreadful series.
Showtime has also released a final trailer for the season, which emphasizes the murder mystery at the heart of the show. This trailer shows that besides all the supernatural chaos that will engulf 1930s Los Angeles, the true evil here is something else. It’s the racial discrimination towards Los Angeles’ Mexican-American migrant community. Then there’s the emerging threat of the American Nazi party. This new trailer also gives us our first glimpse of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Brent Spiner (Data) in his role of Chief of Police.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels stars Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Nathan Lane, Jessica Garza, and Johnathan Nieves, and Rory Kinnear. Original Penny Dreadful creator John Logan is executive producer. City of Angels premieres on Showtime on Sunday, April 26.
