Two names you probably never expected to see together in a movie were Paul Rudd and pop star Nick Jonas. But together they soon will be, in the new film from Once and Sing Street director John Carney, called Power Ballad. In this movie, Jonas plays a pop star, once famous for fronting a boy band. Jonas’ character meets the eternally youthful Paul Rudd, who is a struggling wedding singer. The two meet and work on music together and seemingly get along. That’s until Jonas’ character steals one of Paul Rudd’s songs and makes it a hit. This sounds like a more hetero Hedwig and the Angry Inch to us. You can check out the first trailer for Power Ballad below:
And here’s the official synopsis for the Power Ballad from the folks at Lionsgate:
When Rick (Paul Rudd), a past-his-prime wedding singer, meets fading boy-band star Danny (Nick Jonas) during a gig, the two bond over music and a late-night jam session. But when Danny turns one of Rick’s songs into the hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves – even if it means risking everything he cares about. From writer-director John Carney (Sing Street, Once), Power Ballad is a feel-good story about music, self-respect, friendship, and the price of ambition.

The tagline for the film says, “Some songs come with strings attached.” And judging from the trailer, that certainly seems to be the case here. The script for Power Ballad comes from director John Carney, which he co-wrote with Peter McDonald. Rounding out the cast are Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, and Jack Reynor. Both Once and Sing Street were great films where music was the focal point, so we expect Power Ballad to be something special. John Carney’s Power Ballad arrives only in theaters on June 5.
