The 2020 Oscar Nominees Are…

The Oscars! Here’s the thing about the Oscars: they exist. They exist so we watch them. And think about them. And perhaps even care about them. That they’ve existed for so long in the form that they have is is further validation to invest in them, even if it’s also likely a big part of why we so often find their rulings so frustrating.

But no matter how many times the Oscars let us down—opting to represent the lackluster over the challenging—we return to them, year after year, hoping against hope that they might give our favorite films, creators, and performers the accolades they deserve.

So will it happen this year? Well, below is the list of nominees (announced on the morning of Monday, Jan. 13 by Issa Rae and John Cho) who’ll be competing for the gold at the 2020 ceremony. Peruse below and cheer or groan accordingly, and then stick tight to the conversation until Sunday, Feb. 9, when the 92nd Academy Awards broadcasts live, in all its existent glory.
