Be careful what you wish for. That phrase is one that we’ve all heard once or twice in our lives. Sometimes, we want something—or someone—so badly that we’d do anything to get what we desire. And, after obtaining our dream, it can end up being our worst nightmare. That sentiment is multiplied by 1000 in the trailer for Obsession, an upcoming horror film by Focus Features.
In the clip, we meet a young man who has a huge crush on Nikki, a pretty girl whom he tries to get to notice him romantically. Sadly, he fumbles the opportunity. So, he uses a “One Tree Willow” to make a wish that Nikki will love him more than anything. They soon become a duo but things quickly go awry as Nikki’s “love” for him turns into a twisted obsession. Suddenly, the girl of his dreams is a scary ass nightmare of a woman who may or may not try to kill him. Or, she could kill all his friends and family so he can only love her.
At one point in the Obsession trailer, Nikki creepily declares her love for him while referencing the breaking of a willow. His friends joke that he must have her under some kind of spell, which makes everyone laugh. Soon, the laughter stops with only Nikki laughing like a maniac. Welp. What lesson did we learn today, sir? Just like any practitioner of magic will tell you, it is never a good idea to do any kind of spell that takes away a person’s free will, especially when it comes to matters of the heart.
