Are you a past, present, or future Magic: The Gathering player? Maybe you’ve seen some of Magic‘s latest collaborations, like the exciting new Marvel x Magic Secret Lair drops that are coming soon, and want to get to know the game. Maybe you’re a die-hard player, and you’re ready to teach your best friend the ways of Magic, but they’ve never played a day in their life. Perhaps you’ve played a little bit but are looking to sharpen your skills. If you belong to any one of these groups or any other like them, then Magic: The Gathering‘s upcoming Foundations sets and cards are perfect for you. This new collection is a comprehensive overview of Magic: The Gathering‘s greatest hits across its many years of play, and it’s designed to help every kind of player improve their game. We at Nerdist are always excited for fans out there to pursue and hone their nerdy interests. And so it’s our pleasure to reveal two exclusive cards from Magic: The Gathering‘s upcoming main Foundations set.
Magic: The Gathering‘s Drake Hatcher Foundations Card
We’re thrilled to exclusively reveal Drake Hatcher, an all-new card from Magic: The Gathering‘s Foundations main set. We’re sure devoted Magic fans will be thrilled to introduce themselves to this human wizard whom they’ve never seen before. Foundations’ Drake Hatcher is a Blue mana Magic card. (If you’re new to Magic and want to know more about what that means, then the Foundations Beginner Box can certainly help out with that.) In short, we’ll say that Blue mana speaks to the mutability and potential. It’s a perfect color for a Foundations Magic card that’s all about new life. (We also imagine it helped color the adorable creature we see depicted in the gorgeous art of Drake Hatcher.)
This new Magic: The Gathering Foundations card lets you, you guessed it, hatch your own drake. Cue up the “awwwws.” In addition to its main form, the Drake Hatcher Magic card comes in two additional variant forms in the Foundations main set: Borderless and Extended. The Extended version of Drake Hatcher has the same art as the main version. But the Borderless version lets you enjoy a whole new side of your drake-ling. And yes, that’s a total of three adorable Drake Hatcher varients.
This Foundations Magic card has the following description, “Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, put that many incubation counters on it.” and “Remove three incubation counters from this creature: Create 2/2 blue Drake creature token with flying.” What could be more satisfying than hatching a drake? We need this in our deck, stat.
Magic: The Gathering‘s Genesis Wave Foundations Card
The second Foundations Magic: The Gathering card we’re revealing today is Gensis Wave. The Genesis Wave Magic: The Gathering card has appeared before in a few different sets—but this Foundations version of the card has a whole new look, two of them, to be exact. Those familiar with this card will know that it’s a fairly rare card and drenched in Green mana. Green, of course, speaks to the wild nature of the Gensis Wave and the way its sorcery might cause some fascinating evolutions in your Magic game. The description of Genesis Wave is as follows, “Reveal the top X cards of your library. You may put any number of permanent cards with mana value X or less from among them onto the battlefield. Then put all cards revealed this way that weren’t put onto the battlefield into your graveyard.” Definitely a handy card to draw in a pinch.
In the Foundations deck, this Magic: The Gathering card takes on two new looks and comes in Main and Borderless variants. We love the eerie swirling form the card takes on in its Borderless state. And the awe-inspiring plant-like form it takes in its main version is also truly magnificent. It really brings in that Green mana element strongly.
