In Netflix’s upcoming movie Spaceman, Adam Sandler will get some therapy/marriage counseling from an alien… Or, so the synopsis says, anyway. We don’t get to see the alien creature or hear any of its good advice in our first look at Spaceman; in fact, we can barely tell whether this Adam Sandler movie is a serious drama or more of an absurd comedy yet. But there’s just something about an ancient alien voiced by Paul Dano poeticly telling Adam Sandler that he’s finally found him after years of loneliness that has caught our interest. Check out the first teaser trailer for Spaceman below.
We’re not sure we had Adam Sandler in a quasi-serious space movie on our 2024 bingo card, but here Spaceman is. Although this first look is a bit esoteric, the description of the movie reveals more about what we can expect.
Here’s what the official synopsis for Spaceman shares about the movie and Adam Sandler’s character:
Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Adam Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late. Directed by Johan Renck and based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia, the film also stars Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini.
A dissolving romance because of solitary space time is a common trope. Receiving therapy from an alien to help you discover yourself and work through your flaws is a bit less so. We can’t wait to hear what sage extraterrestrial advice Hanuš has for Jakub. And we can’t wait to find out what he looks like.
So is Spaceman an Adam Sandler drama or is it a comedy? It is rated R, but only for language, so that could go either way. We’ll have to stay tuned to find out. Spaceman releases on March 1, 2024.
