The beloved, influential anime Neon Genesis Evangelion is coming to Netflix next year, part of the streaming service’s 2019 anime expansion, which will also include Ultraman, Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac, Rilakkuma and Kaoru, and 7seeds.Neon Genesis Evangelion is set in a futuristic “Toyko 3” as it is under attack by creatures called the Angels. Our hero, Shinji Ikari, is chosen to pilot the Humanoid Decisive Weapon Evangelion, the only weapon that can defeat the Angels. The series follows the ongoing battle for humanity and Ikari’s journey.
All 26 episodes of the show will hit Netflix, along with two feature films: Evangelion: Death True and The End of Evangelion. This is the first time the anime series will be available to stream globally, having previously been hard to find on DVD due to rights issues.Netflix announced the news during their Anime Lineup Presentation event at the Akiba Theatre in Toyko this week. In addition to Neon Genesis Evangelion, they will also debut a handful of original anime series: Ultraman, about a godlike toksatu; Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac, about young knights who protect the reincarnated Greek goddess Athena; Rilakkuma and Kaoru, about the popular Japanese character and the 30-something woman who shares her apartment with him; and 7seeds, about a group of men and women chosen to survive the apocalypse.All of these series, including Neon Genesis Evangelion, will hit Netflix in spring of 2019.How do you feel about Netflix’s anime expansion?
