We’re about to head into a He-Man Mania (He-Mania?) era we haven’t seen the likes of in forty years, with the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie. But it’s not just the big screen that the heroes and villains of Eternia are coming to. Via Variety, we’ve learned that Mattel and Amazon are extending the franchise into the gaming world with Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite, which launches June 5 on Amazon Luna, the same day the movie lands in theaters. The versions of the characters in the game match the designs of the MOTU characters in the upcoming film, for some good cross-platform synergy. You can watch the announcement trailer below:
Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite is described as a couch co-op experience “blending rogue-like deck-building with arcade-style mini-games, designed for both solo and group play.” Legends Unite tells a standalone story, but one at least partially inspired by the world of Travis Knight’s upcoming film. Players will be able to do battle at Castle Grayskull with different foes, and across different environments on Eternia. They’ll be able to harness character-specific powers, along with collectible cards, to move through new challenges. Players will be able to use smartphones as controllers, allowing groups to join without any dedicated gaming hardware.

Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite will reintroduce characters from the franchise’s four decades of lore. One character seen prominently in the key art is Hordak, the leader of the Evil Horde, and Skeletor’s former mentor. We don’t think that Hordak appears in the upcoming movie. But it does mean that there might be future live-action plans for him in the franchise. As longtime fans know, where there’s Hordak, there’s his archenemy She-Ra, He-Man’s twin sister. Anything that hints at live-action She-Ra’s potential future in the Masters of the Universe franchise automatically piques our interest. MOTU fans will just have to wait and see what the future holds.
