Despite previously commenting that Marvel movies are “not cinema,” Martin Scorsese has stumbled into the dark side with another blockbuster franchise. Revealed in a new trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, Scorsese officially joins the Star Wars universe with a voice acting role in the upcoming tentpole. In the trailer, which dropped Tuesday, the legendary director hops on board as an Ardennian shopkeeper with information about the Hutts.

The Mandalorian and Grogu picks up after the hit series, following Din Djarin and Grogu as they traverse a broken empire. Scorsese can be heard voicing a four-armed, furry creature whom Mando approaches for information. The shop-keep seems willing to talk when Mando plops a shiny New Republic coin on the table. However, when he finds out it’s a Hutt the bounty hunter is after, he responds with, “Closed for the night. Thank you.” The cameo is short, but we could spot that voice anywhere.
Scorsese was flamed back in 2019 for likening blockbuster flicks to theme parks. He later clarified that he does not deny the talent involved. The director has done plenty of voice work in the past, including for Shark Tale, Mean Streets, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Given Scorsese’s friendship and working relationship with Mandalorian director Jon Favreau, it’s really not all that shocking to see him coming on board. The Mandalorian and Grogu soars into theaters on May 22. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, joined by Sigourney Weaver as a pilot, Jeremy Allen White as Jabba the Hutt’s son, Rotta, and Jonny Coyne as an imperial warlord. What exciting happenings will the next leg of this adventure bring?
