From the moment Obi-Wan Kenobi handed Luke Skywalker his father’s lightsaber in a A New Hope, it’s been hard to imagine the Jedi Master without one. In almost every poster and piece of marketing one sees based around Star Wars, you see Luke brandishing his iconic laser sword. Most casual Star Wars fans think Luke only ever had two sabers, a blue one and a green one. But what if we told you he has actually wielded six of them in canon?
In a video made by Star Wars Explained and Mr. Sunday Movies (via io9), the entire history of each one of Luke’s Jedi blades is revealed. Even the red Sith saber he used once. Bet you didn’t know about that one! You can watch the full video down below:
The video only explains the lightsabers Luke has used in the current canon. Meaning, the films and the post-Disney expanded material. We’re pretty sure if they went by Star Wars Legends material, the amount would be double. Of course, everyone knows the lightsabers from the films. The one Luke inherited from his father Anakin, and the one he built for himself in Return of the Jedi. Luke uses that second green saber in his recent appearance on the The Mandalorian, and we see it in flashback in The Last Jedi.

During the video, Alex from Star Wars Explained makes a great point about the journey of Luke’s original saber. The Rise of Skywalker shows how Rey buries Luke and Leia’s sabers in the sands of Tatooine. Many fans saw this as a moment of closure for The Skywalker Saga. But Alex suggests it’s a lot more like planting seeds for future stories. At some point, you just know some young new hero is going to discover both of those sabers and start a whole new journey. It’s not a matter of “if,” but “when.” We almost certainly haven’t seen the last of that particular iconic weapon from “a more civilized age.”
