This month, Cyberpunk 2077 will return to the small screen with season two of Netflix’s animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. But soon we might get to see a live-action take on the franchise up on the big screen. A new report says Paramount Pictures is developing a Cyberpunk 2077 film set in the RPG world.

Deadline first reported Skydance’s Paramount Pictures is currently working on a Cyberpunk 2077 movie. Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) will produce alongside the studio behind the video game, CD Projekt Red. Whether it’s a straight adaptation of the game or a totally new story set in the same world is unknown. But considering Keanu Reeves’ role in the game, the smart money would certainly be on him appearing as the legendary rockstar/terrorist Johnny Silverhand in some capacity. Even if he doesn’t, the premise of the game, which takes place in the fictional Californian cyberpunk metropolis Night City, certainly makes for a compelling world on its own.
The best-selling game will certainly come with plenty of name recognition and a huge fanbase. The original Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 40 million copies around the globe. Its expansion, Phantom Liberty, has also sold 15 million copies.

The film will also mark another big screen video game adaptation, one of Hollywood’s favorite modern day source materials. And it will be the latest IP to get a live-action film from Paramount Pictures, which is clearly focused on maximizing big name properties. Street Fighter will hit theaters this month. The studio is also developing Danny McBride’s G.I. Joe script for the big screen. Bradley Cooper has already signed on to star in it.
As for when we might see a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film it sounds like development on the film is still in the very early stages. But with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premiering this month on October 20 there will be plenty Night City fun to hold fans over while we wait to learn more.
