Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is one of our most anticipated films of 2026. We knew we wanted to see it opening weekend the moment that it was announced. And, after seeing the first teaser trailer for The Mummy, we were right to feel that way. So far, things have been pretty secretive regarding the film. There’s simply not a lot that we know right now. But recent comments from Cronin himself about The Mummy paint a very interesting picture of the film, especially the idea that it is a mashup of Seven and Poltergeist.
Cronin spoke to IGN and said quite a lot about his upcoming film without giving away pertinent details. “The movie itself really is a mystery and it’s a puzzle box, which was part of my draw towards it,” he affirmed. “I think for me what’s really interesting and exciting, certainly even from childhood and being drawn towards Egyptian lore and that entire world, is the secrets that exist and the hidden things. So the movie that I wanted to make was reflective of that idea of deep, buried secrets and things we may not know about. This movie is coming from a very different place, and it’s not even a reinvention of mummy lore; it’s looking into darker places and doing something different with what we think we might already know.”
“It’s an insane mashup to suggest, but [this film is] almost one part Poltergeist and one part Seven, but put through my lens and the way that I like to entertain people,” Cronin continued as he described The Mummy. That is quite the way to describe this film. For those who are not familiar, Seven (sometimes stylized as Se7en) is a 1995 crime thriller that starred Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. The film chronicles detectives on the trail of a serial killer who is basing his murders on the seven deadly sins from the Bible. And, of course, Poltergeist is about entities who wreak havoc and abduct a girl from a family’s seemingly idyllic home.

How in the world do you marry those two movies together? Well, here’s the synopsis for The Mummy:
“The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace—eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.”
We can kinda see what’s happening here. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy will hit theaters on April 17.
