Did Josh Hutcherson manifest this into existence? Our original Hunger Games stars, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, will return for The Hunger Games: The Sunrise on the Reaping, the new Hunger Games movie/prequel coming in 2026. Lawrence and Hutcherson will reprise their roles as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. The Hunger Games: The Sunrise on the Reaping movie takes us back to Haymitch Abernathy’s Hunger Games, 24 years before the events of Peeta and Katniss’ Hunger Games came to pass. So, it’s suspected that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will appear in a flash forward during the Hunger Games: The Sunrise on the Reaping, but nothing has yet been confirmed. You can check out The Hunger Games: The Sunrise on the Reaping‘s trailer below and consider what’s to come.
Haymitch Abernathy, of course, will become the District 12 mentor for Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss and Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta when they enter the arena in their own Hunger Games. In The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping‘s book, Katniss and Peeta do actually appear, so the source material for Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson to cameo in the movie already exists. We see them with an older Haymitch in the post-war world of District 12. Whether The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping expands these scenes from the book at all, and whether Haymitch Abernathy’s original actor Woody Harrelson remains unknown.

The synopsis for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping movie shares, “THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING revisits the world of Panem and follows young Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada) twenty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.“
The movie will release on November 20, 2026. We admit, we’re excited to see Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Peeta and Katniss return to the Hunger Games‘ world.
