If there’s one beating heart to Interview with the Vampire/The Vampire Lestat, it’s the relationship between Louis de Pointe du Lac and Lestat de Lioncourt. LouStat, as it’s known to those in fandom, is a complex, nuanced love story that has more ups and downs than most, but always sees the two lovers come back together in the end. For more of The Vampire Lestat, Louis and Lestat were estranged, their short-lived reconciliation after Louis’ Dubai revelations deteriorating again once Lestat found out that Louis had spoken to Daniel Molloy about their relationship and Daniel had published a book about it. But, finally, like a breath of fresh air, or a drink of delicious blood, in The Vampire Lestat episode six, we saw Louis and Lestat move meaningfully toward rekindling their romance. (Not their love, which, of course, is always ever-present.) And even as they came together, there were still a ton of unforeseen obstacles that hit them from all sides. But in The Vampire Lestat, Louis and Lestat prove they have finally grown beyond their previous incarnations, who never communicated with each other. In our interview with Jacob Anderson, Anderson spoke about LouStat and how Louis is finally able to meet Lestat where he is in this moment.
Here are the beautiful sentiments that Jacob Anderson shared about where we leave Louis and Lestat in The Vampire Lestat‘s finale and the fog of love between them. Anderson offers, “I think Louis and Lestat are growing together. I think that’s what the fog of love is this time: it’s an excitement about the person that they’re meeting now. I really like the thing about the theory of relationships that you need to keep meeting the person where they are, rather than where you thought they should be or where they were when you first met them. You have to keep re-meeting them. And I kind of feel like that’s part of what’s happening between Louis and Lestat in episode six of The Vampire Lestat. They’re sort of surprising each other, and that can be a real shock, and there can be some real disturbing things around it. But I think that what they come to at the end of those disturbances is something a little bit more comfortable and something a little bit more honest.”
There may have been a time when Louis discovering Lestat sleeps with his mom or hearing what Claudia really thinks about him may have torn Louis and Lestat all the way apart. But in The Vampire Lestat‘s penultimate episode and finale, we see that Louis and Lestat have come a long way with one another. It seems they have indeed met one another all over again and found the truth of where the other person is in this moment. It feels like LouStat are finally able to work on letting go of the past that’s come between them for so long. Of course, they do so imperfectly, falling back into some passive agressive digs and dramatic outbursts, but the important thing is that they’re not immediately breaking all the plates. Instead, they’re seeking to give one another grace and understanding. Finally, they are actually talking it out.
Honestly, we love that for them. And so does Jacob Anderson. He notes simply of Louis and Lestat’s next chance at love together, “Yeah, happy for them.” We couldn’t have said it better than that.
