Is Joss Whedon Involved in the New FIREFLY Series?

There’s a new Firefly series in development and hopefully on the way. Nathan Fillion and the rest of the original cast have joined together to bring to life an animated Firefly series. But there’s one major question that comes with this news. Will original Firefly creator Joss Whedon be involved in this new animated Firefly series? Whedon has faced major controversy since Firefly aired, so it’s a fair question to wonder about. But it turns out, no, Joss Whedon will not be involved in the new animated Firefly series. Although Nathan Fillion shares that he gave his blessing.

Joss Whedon will not play any active role in the new animated Firefly series. But Nathan Fillion did share that “do this” (make a new Firefly series), we would need Joss’ blessing. And he notes, “I got it.” Of course, that sentiment will leave fans with mixed feelings.

While Whedon was instrumental in creating Firefly, as we said in our previous write-up, “The elephant in the room is Firefly creator Joss Whedon. After several allegations of on-set abuse came to light about him, primarily from the Buffy and Angel casts, his career effectively ended. He was let go from his HBO series The Nevers in 2020, which was then unceremoniously canceled. And he hasn’t produced anything in any medium in over five years. He has no involvement in the upcoming Buffy revival, besides collecting a check. However, Whedon’s former Firefly cast has remained fiercely loyal to him, suggesting they all got different treatment. Particularly loyal to Whedon are Fillion and Tudyk.”

Ultimately, it seems very much for the best that Whedon not be involved in this new Firefly animated series project. Currently, the cast, rights, showrunners, and animation studio are in place. Fillion notes that the only thing the Firefly animated series needs is a home. In fact, you can stream Firefly today on Hulu.
