For over thirty years, Starlog magazine was the geek bible. Long before the internet, or sites like this one, your only way to access the latest news and interviews about Doctor Who or Star Wars was to pick up an issue of Starlog for the scoop. But as the internet grew in prominence, so too did Starlog decline. Its last issue came out way back in 2009, before the arrival of Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, and most of the MCU. But now, Starlog is officially coming back; now as an annual publication. And its return comes just in time for its 50th anniversary. You can check out a preview of the new Starlog first issue in our gallery below:
Going forward, Starlog will be a 100-page magazine led by Editor-in-Chief Annalee Newitz. They’re a science journalist and acclaimed sci-fi author, and the founding editor of io9. The first issue will feature a celebration of sixty years of Star Trek. Which is fitting, since Captain Kirk and Spock graced the cover of the very first issue in 1976. There will also be a deep dive into the politics of Dune. Not to mention, articles exploring real futurism, with things such as orbital space farming, robotics, and much more. One thing we’re happy about already is that Starlog is keeping its cool, mid-century modern logo. We love that retro-futuristic font!

Nerdist’s Take: Starlog Is a Staple of Geek Culture, And We’re Very Glad It’s Back
In a statement, Starlog EIC Annalee Newitz said, “Science fiction and fantasy give us a sandbox to reimagine our world. And Starlog is your invitation to play along. We’re honoring the fannish legacy of the original magazine and bringing it into the future with hopeful, awe-inspiring, and scientifically grounded explorations of where humanity could go next.” Starlog co-owner Tara Ansley added, “Fifty years after the magazine first launched, the line between science fiction and the real world has become increasingly difficult to separate. Technology may change, but the most compelling questions have always been about people. How we live, what we create, and what kind of future we want to build.” Starlog heralded the emergence of nerd culture, and we’re thrilled it’s finally back.
