Is HELLBOY the Movie Comic Book Fans Have Been Waiting For?

Is the new Hellboy movie the film comic book fans have been waiting for? We asked the cast what makes their version of our favorite half-demon with a heart of gold different from previous iterations.

The Right Hand of Doom returns to theaters this spring, in a total reboot of the Hellboy franchise starring Stranger Things‘ David Harbour as Big Red. While previous big screen adaptations from director Guillermo del Toro, with Ron Perlman in the titular role, will always hold a special place in our cinematic hearts, we also love creator Mike Mignola’s original Dark Horse comic books. They were even darker and gnarlier than the movies.

So will this new hard-R film, which adapts the popular Wild Hunt story line from the comics, be what longtime readers have always wanted? To find out, we sent our very own half-demon Dan Casey to sit down with Harbour and the rest of the Hellboy cast—stars Milla Jovovich, Daniel Dae Kim, and Ian McShane—to ask them what separates this new film from the rest.

Arthurian lore. Fighting terrifying giants. Legions of monsters serving someone known as the Blood Queen. And Lobster Johnson! We’re confident there’s going to be a whole lot about this movie that longtime comic book readers of Hellboy are going to love.

We’re just as excited though by what the cast told us about the heart of the film and the motivations of their characters. You can have the best, bloodiest, most gruesome action scenes ever, but they’d be empty if the movie didn’t also capture what we love about Mike Mignola’s original comics, especially the characters.

Directed by Neil Marshall ( Game of Thrones‘ “Blackwater” and “The Watchers on the Wall”), Hellboy comes to theaters on April 12, 2019.
