Music plays an important part of the whole Guardians of the Galaxy narrative. After all, it’s the “mix tape” given to young Peter Quill as a child by his dying mother that becomes his totem and go-to security blanket as the adult Star-Lord. And it’s half the reason the movie is so much damn fun–all the ’70s pop hits sprinkled throughout by way of the mix tape give the film its unique flavor. And with the discovery of a second mix tape at the end of the first movie, we can expect even more retro grooves in the appropriately named Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2.
Now, we’ve learned (via Vulture) that the Guardians writer/director James Gunn and his starring cast have have themselves compiled their own awesome playlist of songs, in conjunction with the folks over at Empire Magazine. Each of the retro song choices comes with an explanation as to why it was picked, some for reasons which really relate to the film, and others just because it seemed to be a particular person’s favorite classic hit (turns out Dave Bautista just loves the Rolling Stones). You can read the individual cast member’s reasons by clicking here.
Interestingly, neither Vin Diesel (Groot) or Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon) has a song on the playlist, probably because they weren’t on set to contribute them at the time. But I’d like to imagine that Baby Groot would continue his Jackson Five love witnessed at the end of the first movie with “Shake Your Body,” and that Rocket would really love the Bay City Rollers’ “Saturday Night.” Just call it a hunch.
