Writer Grant Morrison is one of the greatest creators in comics. They have put definitive stamps on iconic characters like Superman, Batman, the X-Men, and many others. Now, announced at New York Comic Con, IDW has revealed that Morrison is taking on none other than 007 himself in a new series. Morrison will write a new James Bond comic book, done in conjunction with the Ian Fleming estate. No artist or release date has been announced. The comic itself doesn’t even have a title yet, but the opening six-part storyline will be called Sunbreaker. This comic book Bond story will showcase new gadgets, new cars, and a new ultimate villain ripped straight from the headlines. So, probably a tech billionaire? We’re just guessing, of course. But it sure feels likely.

In a statement, Grant Morrison said: “I’ve been a James Bond fan for as long as I can remember. And this opportunity to put my own stamp on a British character as iconic as King Arthur, Robin Hood, or Sherlock Holmes, was too good to miss.” There’s nothing Grant Morrison loves more than taking on an iconic character with decades of contradictory lore. So a character like James Bond fits right into their wheelhouse.
Nerdist’s Take: Grant Morrison Loves the Offbeat Side of Comics, So Expect a Wackier 007 than Ever
Morrison often loves the wackier side of famous characters. So we expect the opposite of a gritty and grounded take on the world’s most famous super-spy. IDW Publishing also had this to say about the upcoming series. “Expect to see James Bond in a few unfamiliar situations, facing unfamiliar foes, in a world very like our own as reflected in a deadly funhouse mirror – a world of intrigue, violence, double cross and deception. A world through which James Bond glides like a killer shark among minnows. Charismatic, ruthless, unstoppable.” Will old-school Bond fan Morrison be able to resist using the word “gold” somewhere in the title, similar to Goldfinger, Man With the Golden Gun, and Goldeneye? We’ll have to wait until 2027 to find out what they’ve got in store.
